Plaster work: skim coats, veneer and repairs.

Hard, flat walls and ceilings in new rooms and old ones, from a cracked ceiling to a whole house in veneer plaster.

Three kinds of plaster work.

Skim coatA thin coat over existing walls or ceilings to flatten texture, old patches and damaged paper.
Veneer plasterA hard plaster finish over blueboard. Tougher than taped sheetrock and smooth enough for any paint.
RepairsCracks, bulges, water damage and holes in old plaster and lath, repaired and blended into the wall around them.

Why plaster instead of more paint.

Paint shows every flaw underneath it. Cracks come back, patches flash through, and a ceiling with old water damage still looks damaged after two coats. Plaster fixes the surface itself.

Many older homes in the area still have their original plaster over wood lath. It can usually be repaired rather than torn out, which keeps the walls solid and the trim untouched.

How plaster work runs.

  1. ProtectFloors, trim and anything nearby are covered; plaster dust and drips travel.
  2. PrepareLoose plaster is secured, cracks opened and taped, and a bonding agent applied where needed.
  3. Base and fillLow spots and repairs are built up flat.
  4. Finish coatThe finish coat is troweled smooth and hard.
  5. Prime and paintOnce it's dry, the wall is primed and painted, by the same crew.

Can old plaster walls be repaired, or do they need to come out?

Most can be repaired. Loose plaster is reattached to the lath, cracks are taped and filled, and the area is skimmed so it blends in. Tearing out is usually only needed where plaster has failed over a large area.

What is a skim coat?

A thin layer of plaster troweled over an existing surface to make it flat and smooth again before painting.

How long before new plaster can be painted?

It depends on the product, the thickness and the weather; plaster has to be fully dry before it's primed. We schedule the paint for when it's ready.
